Alpine Documentation “Tod am Nanga Parbat - Die Messner Tragödie”

Alpine Documentation (), Ludwig Ott (Deutschland) 44 min

This film focuses on the tragedy of the Messner brothers on Nanga Parbat, showing film and photo shots which until now have not been published. Expedition participants comment on the tragic event of 1970 in front of the camera. The film material from the expedition’s cameraman, Gerhard Baur, who became the last witness, as he spent the night before the summit attempt together with the Messner brothers in the high camp, provides information on the background to the tragedy which was afterwards frequently critically discussed. Was Günther Messner’s death unavoidable or did his brother Reinhold make a fatally wrong decision for the sake of success?

Reinhold Messner still makes headlines, even for events that happened 35 years ago. This well-balanced documentary takes us back through the years and tells us two versions of the same event and allows the viewer to make up his own mind. Climbing a mountain may seem of little importance in today’s world, but this is an intriguing story about human frailty and gives an interesting glimpse into the private world of such a public figure.
