Alpine and foreign cultures “Die Wüste der Alpen - Leben im Toten Gebirge”

Alpine and foreign cultures (), Jürgen Eichinger (Deutschland) 43 min

The mountain range „Totes Gebirge“(“Death Mountain Range”) rises in the east of the Salzkammergut lake district. With its 400 km² and its desert-like dry karst highland it is probably the largest area of barren land in the Alps. The film presents a unique landscape which has always attracted people more than it has scared them through its barrenness. People attracted to the area range from salt smugglers to cave explorers and also include a professional musician who spends the summer months on an alpine pasture and herds cattle. The “Totes Gebirge” lives through its contrasts. With the exception of the truly hostile central plateau, it doesn’t deserve its name “death mountain range” at all: there is life, richness and beauty as far as one can see.
