“Das Geheimnis der Bergbauern”
Nature and Environment (), Katrin Kramer (Deutschland) 45 min
What links the scientists in an ultra-modern glass palace of the European Academy in Bolzano to farmers in remote mountain valleys in South Tyrol? This documentary visits the inhabitants of remote mountain farms in the Vinschgau region, whose ancestors lived isolated during centuries and are derived from a dozen of founder families. The scientists search for the preconditions of widespread diseases such as Parkinson, heart conditions and cancer. This film moves in the interesting fields between high-tech research and archaic ways of life. The film reveals how complicated the search for disease-causing genes is and discusses the ethics of the South Tyrolean gene project.
