“Abenteuer Wissen: Lawinen”
Nature and Environment (), Jens Doumen, Ingo Herbst (Deutschland) 12 min
Every year, more than 100 people die in the Alps because of avalanches. Even today, there exist no precise scientific predictions about the moments of danger of avalanches. At present, scientists of the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research Davos are testing a computer simulation which should allow for the first time the exact calculation of the danger of avalanches in every point of one slope. At the same time, the producers of devices which help to find missing persons under avalanches are working on urgent improvements. Although many winter sports people possess this equipment, most of them still don’t know how to use these devices correctly.
