Alpine and foreign cultures “Die wilden Reiter von Kirgisistan”

Alpine and foreign cultures (), Kristian Kähler (Deutschland) 43 min

In the highlands of Kirgisistan many paths are only accessible on horse. In summer, the herdsmen drive their cattle to pastures in altitudes of up to 4,000 m. As long as anyone can remember, they have been using their horses which climb every track and do every kind of work. It is said that the Kirgisian children learn to ride before they learn to walk and that the most skilled horse-riders have always had the most beautiful women. The best opportunity to show their skills are their big celebrations which are also the highlights of a herdsman’s life: weddings, horse-races, horseback fights, and the „Ulak Tartysh“, a Kirgisian type of polo played with a dead goat. We also observe the everyday life in the jurts on the summer pastures and meet Kirgisians who keep up the tradition of hunting with an eagle, of course on horseback.
