Alpine Documentation “Alpinisme: Duel en Himalaya: Grande Bretagne/Allemagne”

Alpine Documentation (), Jean Afanassieff (Frankreich) 53 min

From the beginning of the 20th century, the most important summits in the Alps were reached one after the other. Soon this limited “European playing field”, the Alps, became too small for the mountaineers. Step by step they turned their attention to higher and higher mountains, which were further and further away. The time between World War I and World War II was a time of expressing national identities and the values attributed to these nationalities. A veritable duel between British and German alpinists erupted in a new area: the Himalayas. This battle continued into the 1950s. Every country “has” its summit. For the British it is Mount Everest, for the Germans Nanga Parbat. The Germans and the British dedicated themselves to this battle of summits and high altitudes which they have been trying to win for more than 50 years.
