“Leben im Polarkreis - Das Ren”
Nature and Environment (), Felix Heidinger (Deutschland) 43 min
North of the Polar circle, nature doesn’t free itself of the icy regime of winter until May. As soon as the bushes and berries show their first green, it is time for the reindeers to give birth to their calves. They are born in the loneliest region in Europe, in Lapland. The young calves have only a few months time to grow up, and no other wild animal in the world has to grow up as fast. Because soon after the time of midsummer follows a long and icy winter. The cold consumes the fat reserves and the reindeers have to prove their robustness. When the Polar night wraps everything in icy darkness, the Samen people set off into the snowy wasteland. This is the most thrilling time of the whole reindeer year.
