Fifty years ago, on July fifth, 1958, Andy Kauffman and Pete Schoening became the first humans to reach the summit of Gasherbrum I, 8068 meters (26,470 feet). Other members of the expedition were: Nick Clinch, Dick Irvin, Gil Roberts, Tom McCormack, Tom Nevison, and Bob Swift. “Remembering Gasherbrum I” has been assembled from color slides, black and white images, and 16 mm film taken by expedition members with narration provided by four of the surviving participants. In addition to mountaineering sequences the film provides glimpses into the lives of rural Pakistanis living in the foothills of the remote Karakoram Himalaya.
