The Mediterranean Monk Seal is the most endangered mammal of Europe: Less than 500 individuals are remaining in parts of the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists don’t know much about the habits of these rare pinnipeds who nowadays use inaccessible sea caves while giving birth to their pups. Monk seals had been hunted for centuries and were said to be extinct. Nowadays, decreasing numbers of fish, their prey, cause problems to the seals. Additionally, some of them are perishing in fishing nets. Together with Greek scientists cinematographer Thomas Behrend is looking for “the last of their species” and starts an experiment: With pre-installed remote cameras, they want to observe birth and childhood of a monk seal pup.
