“Söhne der Wüste – Durch die Sahara”
Nature and Environment (), Michael Gregor 50 min
„Bar bela mar“ – sea without water , that is the name given to the hot sand desert Sahara by the nomadic tribes of North Africa. In the middle of the 19th century, the ethnologist and botanist Heinrich Barth from Hamburg, was the first European to traverse the Sahara. After endless strains he arrived at the golden city Timbuktu on the river Niger. The Austrian TV-team of UNIVERSUM follows the traces of this couragious expedition. They encounter the today Tuareg warriors, cross the paths of the legendary salt caravans, pass by the last oasis of the sand desert and reach the final goal of the expedition: the river landscape of the Niger near Timbuktu.
