Music professor Valdis Muktupavels hikes through his homeland, collecting traditional songs from his compatriots. On his journey, Valdis learns to listen to the voices of nature. The singing of the birds in springtime, the howling of the wolves in summer, the belling red deer in autumn and the crying of the song-swans in winter. His hiking tour leads him to the different landscapes of his home country, from the wide beaches of the Baltic Sea near Kurzeme, to the cosy hills of Vidzemes, to the mead forests of Daugava in the Russian orthodox Latgale.
