In extreme landscapes such as the High Alps, the powers of nature and the needs of men differ in the utmost way. Eternal ice and snow masses make mountain passes inaccessible for months. Thunderstorms, storms and hail destroy the harvests. Avalanches, landslides and lightning strikes are capable of destroying the livelihood of men within a fracture of a second and sometimes bring death to the mountain villages. Following the myths of the eternal ice, the myth of magic places and the myth of holy waters, this film develops its dramatic structure. The camera detects the places of a mythical past, and it connects the mostly real stories which are hidden behind legends and rituals with the magnificent high-alpine nature and cultivated landscapes of Austria, Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland.
