Circa 200 years ago, the Sulden valley on the foot of the Ortler was almost unknown. In the newspaper “Innsbrucker Wochenblatt” of 1802, this area was described as “Siberia of Tyrol”, where “farmers and bears eat out of the same bowl.” With the ascent of the Ortler tourism started. The rectory of the curate Eller was the first accommodation for mountaineers, intending to climb the highest summit of the Danube Monarchy. Soon afterwards further pensions, guesthouses, alpine huts and accommodation places were built. Between and after the World Wars Sulden fell asleep like the Sleeping Beauty until the 1970ies. But with the renaissance of the mountain and ski tourism, a true competition of acquiring guests was launched in the north and south of the Vinschgau region. Cable-cars were built to reach the glacial ski areas and Sulden has gained its good “old” reputation again with the help of a few famous friends and sponsors.
