Die Berchtesgadener Alpen

Germany’s only Alpine national park hosts extreme living spaces, such as the karst landscapes of the so-called Steinernen Meer, the Watzmann mountain with the highest rock face of the Eastern Alps, the Eastern Alps, the Wimbachgries with its constantly moving streams of rock waste, and the Lake Königssee, one of the deepest lakes of the country. Whoever wants to survive in this wilderness has to be perfectly adapted to the environment. The film shows chamois with their newborn kids in vertiginous heights, in constant fear of the golden eagle, a master of camouflage such as the snow grouse, and mountain flowers such as the legendary edelweiss. On the high alpine pastures groundhogs are fighting in extreme slow motion, and in the depths of the Lake Königsee the mystique burbot is spawning, an ancient sea fish which 10 million of years ago ended up in fresh water.
