Description
The north face of the Petit Dru which, in 1997, was deformed and destroyed by a rock slide, serves as a metaphor for the life of two extraordinary mountaineers, whose life had been deformed and changed by dramatic accidents. The British Andy Parkin had a severe accident as a mountain guide in 1984, and after his recovery he started a career as an artist. This film shows him working in his atelier near Chamonix. The well known American top alpinist Steve House saw his two accidents as a chance to reconsider his attitude towards life as a mountaineer. For this film, Parkin and House climb together the classical north face route of the Petit Dru, which gives them the opportunity to express their respect for the achievement of those who managed the first ascent in 1935.

Minutes of the jury

Technically and aesthetically perfect portraits of two climbers are extended into a challenging climb which is filmed with a complete coverage from different angles, including a harmonious balance of wide and close shots. Lighting, editing and structure enhance this film. The narrative is driven by the personal qualities of the two climbers. The essence of their differences is perfectly captured visually and emotionally.
