- Description
- The high altitude mountaineer and film maker Dariusz Zaluski is a representative and modern example of the strong relationship between Polish and Austrian alpinists. In 2011, he was a member of the K2 expedition of Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. After numerous failed attempts in the previous years, they finally reached the 8611 m high summit via the north pillar. Darek was filming, as he also did during the international winter expedition of Gerfried Göschl, in 2012, to the Gasherbrum I (8080 m). Whereas the Polish team succeeded in reaching the summit via the normal route, under the hardest conditions, the traces of Gerfried and his two companions, who were on a new route on their way to the summit, vanished.
Dariusz Zaluski will report on the stage on how strongly success and tragedy are connected in the field of high altitude alpinism. Dariusz can talk in particular about the question, because he has a rich experience, whether winter expeditions are a priori doomed to failure. Already in 1997/98 he had participated in the winter expedition to the Nanga Parbat, and in the following years he tried to climb also the Makalu and the K2 under extreme winter conditions. Is the question of sense or nonsense of such undertakings legitimate?
