Description
Ioan Doyle always wanted to be the best. To fail was an unknown term to the Welshman - and to have to give up in a route was accordingly hard for him. After only one year of climbing experience, Ioan already achieved the British grade E5 (VIII+/IX- UIAA), and since then he is considered as an exceptionally talented climber. Meanwhile Ioan Doyle focuses on earning his living as a sheep farmer in his homeland Snowdonia. Nevertheless he wants to keep his climbing level high. Both ambitions are not too easy. After his first prize-winning film „Dringo i’r Eitha“ about Ioan Doyle, Alun Hughes has now accompanied the climber AND shepherd with the camera, for one year, and has produced this fascinating portrait.

Minutes of the jury

The Climbing Shepherd relates the authentic story of the Welsh climbing talent Ioan Doyle, who has consciously decided to spend his life with his wife, sheep and climbing. With good humour and irony, we are introduced into these contrary worlds which at first sight seem to be incompatible. The unpretentious camera work distances itself deliberately from the heroic epics of other films in this category.
