- There is no other eight-thousand-metre peak in the world which is so deeply linked to German-Austrian history as the Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas. No other mountain has ever revealed so clearly the lights and the shadows of the competition for the highest mountains. Many mountaineers, such as Willy Merkl from Munich in the 1930s, died while attempting to reach this summit. Therefore it became the lifelong task for Merkl’s half-brother Karl-Maria Herrligkoffer to conquer the Nanga Parbat. He organised many expeditions and under his leadership, the young Austrian Hermann Buhl succeeded in the sensational first ascent on 3 July 1953. On the anniversary, the famous mountain filmmaker Gerhard Baur presents the story of this ascent of the Nanga Parbat with the help of previously unknown films from archives and with self-shot material in this documentary.
