Description
The film deals with the story and the daily events of the little known and most absurd war on our planet: the conflict has been going on for over twenty years to achieve control over the Siachenglacier, at the far North of the Indian-Pakistan border. The goal is to gain the control over a few hundred square kilometres of ice and rocks in the heart of the Karakorum Range. In the course of 2004, for the first time, a filming team got the authorization to record the most advanced posts of the two enemies. By illustrating the extremely harsh conditions under which modern war is waged by these developing states, this documentary wants to expose the futility of arguments advanced by belligerent countries when it comes to justifying war.

Minutes of the jury

A war for a few metres of rock and ice. This film shows, how a series of interconnected banalities can lead to the total absurdity of such a war in the high mountains. In addition to the story line, the camera work and editing as well as the representation of both fronts in snow and ice, make for an outstanding achievement. The film SIACHEN embodies ideally the core concepts of the Graz Mountain Film Festival with its considered treatments of alpine activity, geopolitical issues, and environmental concerns over man’s impact on the world.
