Description
The continous decrease of permafrost in the Alps has a catastrophic impact on the durability of the mountains. If the ice melts, the mountain loses its stability, the stone becomes poriferous und this results in great rock slides and spectacular avalanches, which are becoming a large danger for human lives. For the first time in history a European team of scientists has been put together to research the field of permafrost. The idea is to be able to understand the influence of building density on mountains has on the melting of the glaciers and the decrease of permafrost; and also to be able to calculate when a mountain is going to crash. Another aim is to improve existing rock slides – security systems and to help secure endangered areas with new methods.
