- Description
- The Indians called the endless open spaces at the Polar Circle in the north-western USA Alyeska – “Great Land”. In the darkness of the polar night this land is an icy, hostile wilderness for months; under the midnight sun in summer, however, the tundra offers plenty of food. In such extreme climatic conditions mobility is necessary. Almost all great animals of the north must, therefore, undertake long migrations every year. The cameraman and author Andreas Kieling presents the survival strategies of the great arctic migrants and he himself has to become a nomad. He endures the long marches, the cold, the humidity and all kinds of sacrifices in order to be able to take unique animal shots at short distances. Once, he had to stay uncomfortably close on the heels of several deer in the forests of the Taiga, where these animals meet during the mating season. This was not always accepted in a friendly manner.
