“Die Seele des Wals – Eine blutige Kulturgeschichte”

Peter F. Müller, Michael Müller (Deutschland) - 52 min

Saturday, 10. Nov. 2007 from 08:00 in Congress Graz - Blauer Salon

The whale has become part of both the cultural history and the history of art – from the antique world of legends to the Christian myths of creation, from the drawings in the Medieval Age to the designs of the modern time. This documentary shows how the image of the whale has changed from an exotic creature into a hunting object of a new and modern industry, thus being feared, admired, worshipped and almost extinguished. The whales’ deep importance for the cultural history is documented from Japan to Europe and North America and has been preserved to this day by the craftsmanship and the remains of the active whale hunting culture.
