“Bibliothek im Eis - Lutz Fritsch in der Antarktis”

Maria Anna Tappeiner, Reinhard Wulf (Deutschland) - 44 min

Thursday, 08. Nov. 2007 from 14:00 in Congress Graz - Blauer Salon

The German Research Station Neumayer is located in the northern Weddel Sea, on the Ekström shelf- ice (70° 39’ south, 08° 15’ west). For technical reasons, the station was constructed under the ice. The working and living space of the nine scientists living there for 15 winter months is functionally equipped under neon lights. No daylight penetrates the rooms, no windows give a view of the Antarctic. Right next to the research station there is the “library in the ice”, an art project by the Köln artist Lutz Fritsch. This art project can be used as a library and as a retreat area by the scientists of the Research station. The approximately thousand books were donated by artists and scientists of all disciplines who all wrote their dedications into them. The result is a unique library at the end of the world.
