“Die Gorillas der Vulkanberge - Der Kahuzi Biega Nationalpark im Kongo”

Peter Weinert (Deutschland) - 43 min

Saturday, 10. Nov. 2007 from 08:00 in Grüner Saal

The last flat land gorillas live in the Kahuzi-Biega national park in the east of the Democratic Republic Congo. They are threatened by the permanent wars in this region and by the indigene pygmies, who hunt the gorillas to eat or sell their meat. Carlos Schuler came to the Congo 20 years ago, and the protection of the gorillas became his life task. In 1996, he took over the running of the GTZ project in the national park, which belongs to the World Natural Heritage of the UNESCO. The „Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit“ (GTZ) works in an international framework to establish a sustainable development. Every day, Schuler and the guards, many of whom used to be poachers, set off to look for the gorillas.
