The more people want to escape the stress and strains of everyday life, the more they seem to look for areas where man still is able to live a life of harmony with nature. The Alps, the biggest mountain range in Europe, incorporate this wild nature and they have become an attractive place to spend leisure time in summer and in winter. However, hardly any of the visitors know that 13 million people live in the Alpine region. Whereas the cities in the valleys are constantly growing, other regions in a distance of only a few kilometres are becoming deserted. Thus the strangers understandably do not want to accept reality, since it does not correspond with their idyllic ideas. If people continue to use the Alps without caring for them, the image of the Alps will change in a dramatic way.
