10. Nov. 2007 from 08:00 in Grüner Saal
The exceptional family tradition of the Dyhrenfurth family as pioneers in the Himalayas and as filmmakers started in the late 1920ies, when German mountaineers arrived first in this area to participate in the competition for an eight-thousand metre summit. The documentary „Zum Dritten Pol“ is the first film to present the eventful life of Professor Dr. Günter Dyhrenfurth and his wife Hettie, daughter of a rich Jewish family. He had a professor’s chair in Breslau, then fled with his family to Switzerland, had to resign as a professor with the rise of the National Socialists, was forced to leave the German and Austrian Alpine Club, lost all of his wealth, …yet he at the same time led two of the most important expeditions to the Himalayas in those early days.
