“Gipfel der Genüsse - Das Hochplateau Luncanilor in Transilvanien”

Winfried Lachauer (Deutschland) - 43 min

Thursday, 13. Nov. 2008 from 14:00 in Grüner Saal

In the southern Carpathians, on the Luncanilor plateau Romanian farmers, most of them shepherds have been living in an almost completely isolated world for centuries. They have survived all political turbulences without any harm, simply because nobody was ever interested in them. Until today, there is no road leading to them and wolves and bears still exist. From June onwards everyone has to help with the hay- making, the meadows are still mown with scythes. They take turns in herding the sheep. There are no cars. Electricity was introduced only a few years ago. A simple life. Milk, cheese, meat, corn, potatoes, all the food is produced by themselves in an excellent quality. The home-made schnaps made by Onu Susan is legendary. Balmosh, a mush cooked in pure sheep cream is the traditional daily meal. A proverb says that a girl is only allowed to marry when she is able to cook a good Balmosh. This is a rural life, very close to the origins, which is not easily found elsewhere in Europe.
