“Heimat Gondo – Ein Dorf nach der Katastrophe”

Hilde Bechert (Deutschland) - 43 min

Thursday, 13. Nov. 2008 from 14:00 in Congress Graz - Blauer Salon

The mountain village Gondo is located on the south side of the Alps, in the Swiss canton Wallis, on the foot of the Simplon pass on the border to Italy. On October 14, 2000, an avalanche of stones, mud and water flooded the small mountain village. 13 people were killed, 10 houses destroyed. However, Gondo managed to survive. New houses have been constructed on the banks of the river Doveria, and in the centre one memorial for the victims has been built. After the disaster, the 150 inhabitants had to decide whether to come back to Gondo or not. How deep were their traumata? How deep is their relation to their home-land? How many fears can they support in front of the powerful nature? At least one third of the former population has moved elsewhere. Most of them were young. The school is closed now. How can Gondo survive?
