No other volcano in the Pacific Fire Ring threatens humans more seriously than the Popocatepetl in sight distance from Mexico City. More than 25 million of people are endangered in case of an eruption. However, some of them do not fear the volcano, because the “Misioneros del Temporal“, the so-called rain makers, appease it with rituals and sacrifices. The Colima, the most active volcano in North America, is located 500 km in the west. Scientists watch it with their heat sensing cameras and their gas monitors, because for four years now, the so-called lava dome of the Colima and its ash eruptions are increasing. In Guatemala, the volcanoes have always been a traditional cult site of the Mayas, now they are also a tourist attraction.
