- Description
- One nation which has discovered Mount Everest, only lately, was the USA. In 1963 they organised a huge classical expedition under the leadership of Professor Norman Dyhrenfurth. They did not content themselves to repeat the then already established routes, but they opened a new route via the west ridge, across the today famous „Hornbein-Couloir“. Under the most hostile conditions, after various camps at high altitude and a spontaneous change of the planned route, Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld finally reached the summit. This film narrates the historic events and confronts them to an ongoing expedition via the same route. The American mountaineers have to admit that the ascent on the west ridge of Everest has not at all become easier since 1963.
