Description
The Indian sloth bears became famous all over the world due to the Jungle Book, because they were the model for Balu, the bear. Therefore it is more astonishing that no nature film exists about these charismatic animals. One reason might be, that they are extremely shy and mainly nocturnal, in addition they can be very dangerous. The two animal film makers Oliver Goetzl and Ivo Nörenberg from Hamburg face this challenge. In Karnataka in the south of India, during more than three years and with more than 200 shooting days, they succeeded not only in filming the sloth bears in day light, but could also document their behaviour, which until now was mostly unknown even to scientists. The film maker had to construct elaborated camouflage hide-outs and even a panorama tower. They also used numerous remote-controlled cameras, above all in the caves, in the neighbourhood of termite hills and under trees of ripe fruit.
