Description
Every year millions of Indian farmers eagerly await the monsoon rains, such as the small village Javele Baleshwar. If the monsoon arrives too late, the seeds wither on the field. If the rain is too heavy, it washes away the crop. The dry earth cannot absorb the mass of water, most of it flows irretrievably away and remains unused. In Javele Baleshwar people want to act. The inhabitants of the village have joined the great programme of the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), a non-governmental organisation which plans to gain a better use of the rain waters by constructing a simple but effective channel and dam system. The ambitious goal takes into consideration not only the necessary water supply on the fields but also the maintenance of the traditional agricultural way of life in this dry and hostile environment. This requires the even-handedly cooperation of all inhabitants.
