Description
The 6.094m high Jirishanca, the „Icy Hummingbird Beak“, is an imposing, ice-covered pyramid which rises from the Cordillera Huayhuash in Peru. Since the first ascent in 1957 by Toni Egger and Siegfried Jungmeir, there has been only one further successful expedition on the east side of the mountain. In June 2012, Michi Wohlleben, Arne Bergau and Hannes Jähn try to climb the Jirishanca via the “Italian Route”. It is extremely difficult to climb these overhanging rocks which are almost impossible to belay, with a difficulty degree of 6c+ at an altitude of 6,000 m and with crampons on the boots. They have to overcome up to 10 m high overhanging snow and ice slopes of 45°. Will they succeed in reaching the summit?
