The Ortler rises almost 4.000 metres into the South-Tyrolean sky. It is highly respected by mountaineers alike, a summit ascent is still a high Alpine adventure. Around this “King of Mountains” of the eastern Alps lays the nature park Stilfser Joch with its important ibex population. It is also here, that the most famous Alpine road, the Stilfser Joch Strasse, leads across this notorious Alpine pass of the same name, from the South-Tyrolean Vinschgau to the Italian Lombardy. This film portrays the Ortler Mountain and the humans around it. We accompany a group of mountaineers to the summit and a former poacher on his hunt for pictures of the ibex in the nature park. The Ortler area is a region of superlatives, the most famous mountaineers have their home here and speak about themselves and their mountain: Reinhold Messner, Gustav Thöni, Paul Hanni and Toni Stocker.
