It is said that it was on the extraordinary 3,614m high Tödi Mountain where Rudolf Theodor Simler from Zurich had the intuition to found the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). On the 19th of April 1863, the club was founded and Simler was its first president. Still in the same year, the famous Grünhorn alpine hut was built, the “mother” of the total 152 alpine huts belonging to the SAC. Today, the SAC is a national institution counting 140,000 members, and tourism is booming. With feature scenes and historic documents, this film tells the great history of the conquest of the Alps. It reveals the SAC’s role and tries to find out what the essence is of the famous “call of the mountains”.
