The north of Oman offers a rich landscape, extending from the sea coast, where its capital Maskat and the ship building centre Sur are located, to the Wadis with their picturesque oases, along old trading routes, and up into the rough mountain world of the Al Hajar Mountains. In the valley, one can still find traditional handicrafts and a goat market attracts cattle dealers from all over the country to the oasis town of Nizwa. Oman, however, is above all a desert land, the homeland of Bedouins and their camels in the endless dunescapes of the Sharqiyya Sands.
