After the end of brown coal mining in the east-German region Lusatia, huge fallow lands became available, in which habitats full of rare plant and animal species could develop. In addition to wolves, cranes and sea eagles, insects, amphibians and birds have conquered the former pits and spoil heaps. Wetlands, heather and forests are now fascinating research objects for ecologists and biologists.
