South Tyrol is a natural paradise. But not for the residents of Mals in Italy. They are up in arms because they want to a live a life free of poison. Their opponents are the region's apple growers, who continue to use pesticides that were banned back in 2014. This allows the agrochemicals to continue to spread throughout the region – even up to high altitudes – with a devastating effect on a host of insect species. The dispute is now creating a stir throughout Europe, to the dismay of tourism managers in South Tyrol.
