As well as a spectacular natural landscape in the heart of Europe, the Alps are home to 13 million people in eight countries, whose multitude of languages, dialects and ways of life reflect this region’s cultural diversity. But the idyll of the mountains’ picturesque villages also has a dark side: While tourism creates jobs, it also destroys nature, with noisy roads bisecting the Alpine valleys and climate change evident. Adapted to the harsh nature for centuries, the locals fear for their living environment.
