On a picturesque Alpine river in the heart of Europe there lives a bizarre mythical creature – the Northern bald ibis. In the German town of Burghausen on the Salzach river near the border to Austria, a globally unique nature conservation project is taking shape: Never before has a migratory bird returned to a region in which it had become extinct. Against the picturesque backdrop of a river landscape dotted with castles, the film follows individual birds and their human carers, showing the challenges, difficulties and successes of the repopulation project.
