The journey of the two Argentinian brothers Azulay along the coast of the African continent occupies a special position among this year’s contributions in terms of both its cinematography and its narrative. The way in which they incorporate and give prominence to the different countries, their cultures and their people is nothing short of masterful storytelling. It would be hard to make up this intensity of coincidences and incidents, let alone to “script” a story with the level of authenticity the filmmakers have achieved here.
Having travelled to many parts of the world as both filmmakers and surfers, the Gauchos del Mar now venture on a 22 month-long journey through Africa in a converted ambulance. They know that the continent with its 55 countries will present them with challenges. The scars left by colonialism, civil wars and social inequality are clearly evident. During their surfing expedition, they will meet people from a wide range of backgrounds, who they will also come to depend on. The two Spaniards know that, from now on, Africa calls the shots.
